Klondike Derby - Day of the Race
From Hopewell District
| Klondike Derby Leader Guide |
Arrival
Please arrive no more than 30 minutes prior to your assigned starting time.
Check-in
Upon arrival, Patrol Leader (ONLY) will check in at Registration. The Scout Sled Patrol Leader must be the one to register - no adults. Do NOT take your whole Patrol and do NOT take your sled to the Registration booth. Remaining Team members remain with the Sled at the staging area to await weigh in and inspection.
At the Registration booth, the Patrol Leader will receive a sledge number, scorecard and trail map. Teams with sleds will get in line at one of two inspection stations where sledge will be weighed and inspected. A Registration official will afix the sledge number tag to the sledge after successful weigh in and completion of inspection. Teams will receive their Patches after they complete the trail.
City Mayors must report to Employment to register their City workers. They will receive their patches for their workers and the City Slicker Tags will also be issued which will permit adults to work in a city. City Workers can report directly to their City.
Inspection
The Inspection Crew will check to make sure everyone is properly dressed, you have all the equipment, and your sledge meets minimum standards. (See REQUIRED INDIVIDUAL EQUIPMENT and SLEDGE/TEAM REQUIREMENTS)
Starting Line
At the Starting Line each team will receive a sealed map just before the gun is sounded
Twelve teams will be started at once.
From the Starting Line, four teams will race approximately 100 yards to each of three cities. Example: starting places 1-4 will race to city #1, 5-8 will race to city# 2, etc.
All team members must stay with the sled until reaching assigned starting city’s parking lot. Your starting city will be circled.
Go to your starting city and your first adventure, then follow the Klondike Trail clockwise from there.
The trash bag is for picking up any trail litter you come across and for the trash from your lunch. You will be awarded a bonus nugget for returning a filled trash bag at the end of the trail.
The Trail
On the trail you will pass through several cities and participate in different adventures requiring Scouting skills, teamwork, and problem solving.
Mounties
While on the trail your team may meet the MOUNTIES. The Mounties are checking to see if everything is going smoothly and everyone is having a good time. They will check all adults for their registration tags.
The Finish
Once you cross the Finish Line your ending time will be recorded.
You must take your sledge to Final Inspection. At Final Inspection your sledge will be inspected on how well it survived your adventure and to make sure it weighs at least 60 lb.
After Inspection, the PATROL LEADER ONLY will take the Sledge Number, Score Card, and Nuggets to the Registration Office where he will receive his Klondike Script. Do not lose Gold Nuggets as they will be counted this year to determine Team scores. He will then be directed to Scoring where his team's final score will be determined and posted.
After completing the Derby, move your sledge out of the way, dispose of your trash bag in the dumpster, check the Score Board to see how well your team did, and go to the Alaska Cafe to cash in your Script for a cup of MUD, and a Hot Dog and relax.
